About Cantina Laredo in Downtown Austin
One of two new Mexican restaurants to
hit the downtown scene in the summer of
2006, Cantina Laredo brings its menu and
ambiance to the new Second Street
District. Located on the Northeast
corner of the AMLI downtown community
(east unit), Cantina Laredo is just a
couple blocks off the main corner of the
Warehouse District. With a nicely
decorated interior and patios off each
side, they are quickly becoming an
upscale option for downtown lunch diners
and hipsters aiming to avoid the $30
menu items common to the area. |

The menu at
Cantina Laredo Austin
If you
look at reviews in Google you'll see
they're not staring well in the 5 star
system. However, they only had 3
reviews at the time we wrote this.
Reading over those and you get the
picture that they're actually other
local restaurant owners writing them
because they're scared of the corporate
encroachment into their culinary
territory. Cantina Laredo has
nothing on
Guero's and
Manuel's? Whatever! is my
response. I could tell from the
salsa that corporate or not, these guys
aim at authenticity. I had
quesadillas al carbon that were bursting
at the seems with delicious al carbon
beef and melted cheese. I could
barely finish half my plate...something
that never happens at the aforementioned
restaurants above.
A quick note to the
wait staff at Cantina Laredo. Our
waiter was top notch in terms of quick
service and professional touch.
We asked him to write down the top ten
items from the menu, which he politely
did with small explanations as to why
(see below). I should have asked
him before I ordered and branched out
into algo mas authentico!
But there's always next time. |
