| Austin's Mount
Bonnell is one of Austin's oldest
tourist attractions being documented as
far back as 1850. It is the highest
point within Austin City Limits at 785
feet, but is actually smaller than Mt.
Larson directly across from Mt. Bonnell
but located in West Lake Hills. A
wonderful place to picnic in the sun,
Mt. Bonnell contains views of Lake
Austin and the
Pennybacker or 360 Bridge as well as
wonderful vistas of downtown. The area
is a short hike from the road and there
is no entrance fee.

A
Romantic Side Note: There is a legend that Mt. Bonnell was once
called Antoinette's Leap, named after a damsel who leaped to her death to
avoid capture from
Indians that killed her lover, who fought to his death to defend her. Now generally
considered safe, Mt. Bonnell is one of the most romantic locations in Austin. Lovers: keep
your heads clear and avoid walking too close to the cliffs! Parents should keep an eye on
their children as well. |
|
| Directions: Mt Bonnell is located off FM 2222. Depending
upon your location, it may be easier to take Koenig Lane (this street assumes several
names as it crosses town) until it turns into FM 2222 on the West side of Mopac.
Alternatively, you can take Capital of Texas Highway to Mopac and go North until you reach
FM 2222 or US 183 to Mopac and head South to FM 2222. Head West from Mopac on FM 2222
until you reach Mt. Bonnell Road and turn left. This road curves through several hills
until you reach the parking lot on your right. Take the stairs from the parking lot to the
vista. FM 2222 is also accessible from Loop 360, in which case you will need to go east
and turn right on Mt. Bonnell Road.
