The Name

Anyone who knows about stand-up comedy in Texas holds the name “Cap City Comedy Club” in the highest regard.  This Austin staple opened its doors in 1986 as The Laff Stop and was rebranded in 1996 to Capital City Comedy Club.  In 2012, Cap City was instrumental in the creation of the Moontower Comedy Festival, one of the country’s best and most sought after comedy festivals that brings talent and tourists from all over the world.

Like so many iconic businesses in Austin, the pandemic brought a close to the chapter of Cap City Comedy Club’s time at Research Boulevard.  However, 2021 brought the beginning of a new chapter: Reopening under new ownership at The Domain with 2 state of the art showrooms, a delightful menu, and a calendar full of amazing comedians.  Indeed, this new chapter has proven to be successful!  In 2022 Cap City Comedy Club was voted Best of Austin for Comedy Clubs beating out other long-standing clubs like Esther’s Follies and Velveeta Room!


The Club

Cap City’s new location in The Domain is everything you’d want in a comedy club.  The Showroom, which hosts mostly national acts, is set up like a cabaret theater with small round tables for those that have reserved tickets for those spots.  There are also General Admission tickets that are situated in the second floor balcony.  These are “first come, first sat” so be sure to arrive in plenty of time to get a great spot (as well as some libations & nosh!).     

The Red Room at Cap City Comedy Club features local Austin acts as well as up & coming comedians you’ll want to say you saw first!

Tickets for each show can be picked up an hour before the show starts and Cap City recommends you arrive no later than 30 minutes before showtime to ensure a great seat for the evening.  Like most comedy clubs, there is a 2 items per person minimum (so basically a drink & and snack!).  With most shows at Cap City running between 90 and 105 minutes, you’ll definitely want to peruse their eclectic menu for drinks and nosh to enjoy during the show.

The Events

While Capital City Comedy Club was instrumental in starting the Moontower Comedy Festival, there are so many events there that will keep you laughing year round!  For nearly 40 years, Cap City has been home to the “Funniest Person in Austin” contest, which has been a springboard to success for many local comedians.
